Itinerary options

1. Al Thakira Mangroves (4 hours)

Paddle through the mangroves at Al Thakira nature reserve – located on a large coastal stretch at the north end of Al Khor Corniche.

Kayaking is the adventure of choice in this wild, natural mangrove forest. There’s plenty to see while you manoeuver your way through this lush haven. It’s also a great way to get up-close and personal with the fauna, especially for the avid birdwatcher. Look out for reef egrets, terns, herons and the pink flamingos that are passing through in the winter months. Come prepared though – you may get wet on this wild adventure!

If you’re not interested in getting wet – or waiting for the birds – and all you really want is to enjoy a lazy day at the beach, then Al Thakira Beach has perfect sandy beaches and clear blue water.

Tip: If you’re a newbie kayaker, paddle through the mangroves slowly.

Approximate travel time from Al Thakira Mangroves to Purple Island: 35 minutes

2. Purple Island (3 hours)

Purple Island is a 25-minute drive from Al Thakira Mangroves. Known in Arabic as Jazirat bin Ghannam, this expanse of greenery and blue waters offers a touch of tranquillity and adventure – take your pick! If you didn’t kayak at Al Thakira, do it here in the early afternoon and marvel at the marine animals like snails, glass shrimps and mud crabs.

If you want to be more adventurous, stand-up paddle boarding makes for an exciting adrenaline rush. If that’s not your thing, explore the unusual hills that are made of accumulated limestone and spot the migratory birds resting here before they take off again to faraway places.

Tip: Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Approximate travel time from Purple Island to Al Khor City: 20 minutes

3. Al Khor City (1.5 hours)
Al Bayt Stadium

All that adventure must have made you mighty hungry by now! So before you wander down to Al Bayt Stadium, take a little trip into Al Khor City. You’ll find plenty of options to choose from and a myriad of different cuisines.

Tip: If you don’t want to stray too far, one of the malls is a great place to find a selection of cuisines all under one roof.

1. Al Shahaniya Camel Track (4 - 5 hours)

After you have had a nice breakfast – maybe a traditional Qatari one – it’s time to travel half an hour outside of Doha to visit the camels at Al Shahaniya.

Camels have been a part of Qatar’s deserts for centuries and have played a significant role in its history, too. After being used as a food source, to move from place to place and carry big loads, camels became part of racing festivities at local weddings. Today, camel racing is a lucrative business and one of Qatar’s national sports.

Qatar’s main camel racing track – a site of many important local and international competitions and festivals – can be found in Al Shahaniya and is the area’s focal point of interest. Once here, you must watch one of the races. They’re thrilling, and the interesting thing is the jockeys are robots! These robots are remote controlled and strapped to the camel’s hump. You’ll often see the owners or camel herders racing in their 4-wheel-drives beside the track with remote control in hand. Definitely a sight to behold!

Tip: If you get there before 10 AM, you can watch the camel grooming and training rituals. Approximate travel time from Al Shahaniya Camel Track to Souq Al Wakrah: 55 minutes

2. Souq Al Wakrah (3 hours)
Souq Al Wakrah

Enjoy a tranquil evening by the sea asSouq Al Wakrah promises to be quite the treat.

Here, you can see, feel and hear how life was in the region hundreds of years ago, when pearl diving and fishing were Qatar’s main industries. Explore the traditional architecture and aged structures as you walk through the winding alleys and courtyards – and you’ll discover so much more. There are shops selling honey, spices, perfumes and souvenirs – and even stables you can visit. Round off your visit with a camel ride or enjoy dinner at one of the very reasonably priced beachfront restaurants. It’s a gem of a trip you’ll treasure forever.

1. National Museum of Qatar (3 hours)
National Museum

This museum, inspired by Qatar’s infamous desert rose, makes any visit an instant hit. Here, you can wander through a series of halls where Qatar’s history seamlessly unfolds in front of your eyes through exhibits, films and visual experiences – all of which are immersive, experiential and brilliantly curated – together with displays of artefacts presenting the Qatar peninsula from its early geology to the present day.

Tip: Get yourself Qatar Museums’ One Pass – giving you access to a host of cultural spots. Approximate travel time from the National Museum of Qatar to Msheireb Downtown: 10 minutes

2. Msheireb Downtown Doha (3 hours)

Msheireb Downtown Doha is a great place to have your breakfast. Here, you can stroll through Barahat Msheireb – the region’s biggest open-air covered pedestrianised square – or hop on the tram and take a little tour of the area before you decide where you want to catch a bite to eat. Afterwards, browse through the Msheireb Museums to catch a glimpse of life in early day Qatar.

Msheireb Downtown Doha is located in the heart of the capital, and was once the commercial hub of the Doha. Today, it’s been converted into the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project and is now one of the smartest cities on earth.
