11 facts football fans need to know about HIA

As Qatar continues to make progress on its preparations to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, Hamad International Airport (HIA), the world's newest airport opened for business last month in Doha. 

"The new state-of-the-art airport will welcomethousands of supporters from all corners of the world in Qatar in 2022 to attend the first ever FIFA World Cup to take place in the Middle East," said Nasser Al Khater, Executive Director, Marketing & Communications for the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy. "The celebration will start the minute fans, media and teams land at the global gateway to the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, with a seamless travel experience, world-class service and unparalleled hospitality." 

Here's what football fans need to know about the new airport:

– The maximum number of flight hours to reach Qatar for two out of every three football fans across the globe. HIA is one of the most geographically accessible airports in the world. 

141 – Number of cities national carrier Qatar Airways flies to across the world, connecting football fans from across the globe. 

60 – Estimated number of minutes to reach any venue in Qatar after touching down at HIA.

75 – Number of FIFA-standard football pitches that would fit into the new airport terminal building. 

0 – Number of internal flights you'll need to take to attend matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup™. Once you land at HIA, there will be no need for you (or the players!) to fly anywhere else in Qatar to attend a match.

1 million – Estimated number of visitors to Qatar in 2022, with the vast majority passing through HIA.  

66 million – Today, HIA can manage 30 million passengers per year. This number will increase to 66 million by 2022. To accommodate football fans flying in from all over the world for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™, this number will rise to 66 million. Increased capacity means short waits and more time for football. 

3 – Ways of getting to your accommodation. Qatar's public transport system – which will include a state-of-the-art Metro network, and extended bus and taxi fleets – will ensure that you're never far away from the gates of your next match.

25 - Estimated minutes it takes from HIA to the centre of Doha, only 16km away.

29 – Size of Hamad International Airport in square kilometers. The airport contains two squash courts, a gym, a 25-metre swimming pool, saunas and a spa – in addition to the 70 retail outlets and 30 cafes and restaurants you can enjoy before and after your workout.

1 – Giant Teddy Bear. The public art display entitled "Lamp Bear" by Swiss artist Urs Fischer is a big hit with travellers. Arriving football fans will also notice the work of Dutch artist Tom Claassen, who has produced a series of sculptures of the oryx, an antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula, in the Arrivals Hall. Passengers will also encounter a range of other art, including paintings, sculpture, electronic and interactive installations, for an innovative and immersive visual experience.
