Xavi: Buffon deserves UEFA Champions League title

Two years ago, Xavi Hernández captained his beloved Barcelona side as they liftedthe UEFA Champions League trophy in Berlin against Juventus. Ahead of this year'sfinal, and after lifting two domestic trophies in Qatar with Al Sadd S.C. this year, the Spanish midfielder has made it clear that he would like to see the Italians emerging winners in Cardiff on 3 June to crown the remarkable career of goal-keeping legend Gianluigi Buffon.

"Winning the Champions League would be a crowning moment in Buffon's career," Xavi exclusively told www.sc.qa. "I would like to see Buffon winning the Champions League. As a Barcelona fan, it is logical and natural that I want Juventus to win. But I also want them to win for Buffon and Dani Alves, who also deserves it. Dani is an impressive player who has made a difference in the lead-up to the final. I also have a very good relationship with Dani."

After recently winning the Emir Cup at Khalifa International Stadium, the first venue to be completed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™, the Al Sadd captain said he is looking forward to a great contest in Cardiff.

"I see the chances of both teams in the final at 50-50, a final is always difficult to predict and there are no clear favourites. Juventus have been doing things well for years, and they are a big club and have not won the Champions League for many years now and will be eager to set the record straight. Real Madrid are also very strong, they have signed good players, I think we're going to see a great final."

"Juventus have players like Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuaín who can make a difference in attack, In addition to defence, Dani is also contributing a lot in attack and creating some great goals. For Real Madrid, Karim Benzema can be decisive, so too Isco, Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo. They have a lot of players who can all make a difference individually. We will see a fantastic final."

The FIFA World Cup™ winning midfielder recently completed his second season in Qatar in style, and added that he has been impressed by the passion for football in the country and across the region.

"The passion for football in the region took me by surprise. I knew that they love football, but I didn't realise to what extent they did. I have been to Jordan, for example, with Generation Amazing, and they received me like a national hero. I have never experienced anything similar in any country in Europe. The passion and the excitement they have for football is incredible."

The Catalan midfielder concluded by highlighting the meaning of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ to the people of the region.

"The people in Qatar and the region are hugely excited about this World Cup, the first in the Arab world, and it means a lot to the people here. I have been to Iran playing the AFC Champions League, and it is incredible how they received us, and me personally."

Xavi concluded by talking about his relationship with Qatar. "Here in Qatar, I've seen a total passion for football, and the willingness to do things well. I have to thank Qatar for giving me the opportunity to work on this project. Through Generation Amazing ,I have a fantastic way of helping the workers here in Qatar, and also people of other Arab countries. The World Cup 2022 project is incredible and I'm proud to be a part of it."
