Football Tournament for Qatari Students in the UK
Our international ambassador initiative engages Qataris studying abroad and regularly updates them on our progress, so that they can tell the world about Qatar's plans for the Middle East's first FIFA World Cup™.
Our Football Tournament for Qatari Students in the UK gives these ambassadors the chance to test their skills against their compatriots and Arab neighbours. It also allows us to expand the reach of the international ambassador initiative by inviting more students to take part.
In February 2017, we arranged – in conjunction with the Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the State of Qatar in the United Kingdom – a day-long football tournament for Qataris studying at universities across the UK. It was attended by Mohammed Al-Kaabi, Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the State of Qatar, and Fahad Al Kuwari, Assistant Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the State of Qatar.
There were 12 teams of six players, based on the UK cities where they live, separated into two groups. The top four teams from each group then progressed to the knockout stage.
After the team from the University of Huddersfield emerged victorious, we held an information session, where students learned the latest on our FIFA World Cup™ preparations and found out how they could support our efforts from their temporary homes in the UK.
Many of the students were already aware of our progress. We started sending updates to students in the UK in October 2015, and since then we have regularly provided information about FIFA World Cup 2022™ progress that they can pass on to their peers. In April 2016, we extended the initiative by holding workshops for more than 400 students in Oxford, Liverpool, Huddersfield and Cardiff.
As a result of these mailings, workshops and information sessions, we now have a strong network of Qatari students who are able to answer any questions on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and help to promote it abroad.
