The journey
The journey

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) understands the integral part our workers play in delivering our FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ stadiums – and that they need comprehensive training to achieve the highest standards.

We are committed to providing a level of training and education that will enhance their future opportunities when they leave our projects. We want our workers to help accelerate Qatar's development while also creating pathways for their own futures.

Of course, we prioritise workers' health above all else, so we also provide training that enables them to recognise risks and safeguard their own wellbeing.

What is the SC responsible for?

The SC ensures all workers receive appropriate training on the skills required to carry out their roles, including any behavioural-based safety training and regular refresher training throughout the term of their employment contracts. We also carry out training and awareness sessions for contractors to improve their understanding and implementation of the Workers' Welfare Standards – which ultimately benefits the workers.

If any worker helping to deliver FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ projects acquires a new skill that they can take back home or will improve their future employment prospects, then we will have taken a significant stride towards leaving a sustainable human and social legacy.

What are we doing and what have we achieved?

The SC delivers a training course to introduce all our new workers to life in Qatar, improve their technical capabilities and enhance their job performance, while increasing productivity and safety. This course was created in partnership with renowned training and safety specialists, Qatar International Safety Centre (QISC).

The course ensures a smooth transition into working and living in Qatar by teaching workers practical lessons like how to use an ATM, key English and Arabic phrases, and how to get around Qatar. There are also refresher tutorials on health & safety standards, the SC's Workers' Welfare Standards, our grievance mechanisms and other useful initiatives. As of September 2019, more than 8,800 workers have received the Workers' Welfare induction training.

As part of the agreement with QISC, occupational health & safety training for workers has also been delivered – to minimise work-related injuries and occupational risks. Almost 9,000 workers have received this training to date and we expect more than 10,000 workers – including steel-fixers and carpenters – to benefit from it.

Workers receive targeted training that reflects the jobs they carry out. Upcoming training sessions for supervisors, medical staff and management will be more generalised to help them identify potential risks across all SC sites.

The SC regularly hosts workshops and training sessions providing stadium contractors and sub-contractors with an in-depth understanding of the requirements contained in the SC's Workers' Welfare Standards. These sessions inform contractors and other contracting parties about all elements of the revised edition of the standards – released in March 2016 – and their obligation to ensure they are implemented correctly.

In September 2016, we retained the services of Verité to carry out lead auditor training (social audit) for SC staff and for selected contractors. Verité is an organisation that specialises in assessing social compliance and improving working conditions. Programme worker welfare officers and worker welfare officers from 10 contractors attended the course, along with five members of the SC's Workers' Welfare team.

• 10,000+ workers given workers' welfare induction training
